Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline

P.O. Box 4990

Incline Village, NV 89450

Meeting on October 30

George Lebard gave a presentation about Project MANA.  This organization does a tremendous amount of good in our community feeding those in need.

Foundation Dinner on November 6

There was no meeting on this date because of the Foundation Dinner in Truckee. Quite a few members from our club attended and were treated to an amazing Chautauqua performance of Paul Harris by a ten year old from Truckee.

  Meeting on November 13

Because it is foundation month at Rotary, Sue Welsch gave a presentation about polio. She described her ordeal with polio as a child and with post polio syndrome as an adult. Each club is expected to help match the $100 million challenge grant to Rotary International from the Gates Foundation by raising $3,000 over the next three years.  At the board meeting following the meeting, the board approved a project to place clean empty paint cans with a slot in the lid and a request for a donation to the Rotary Polio Plus program at businesses in town. This will improve visibility and help to meet our challenge.

Future Meetings

Paul Guttman will provide a speaker on Thursday, November  20, but we will be dark on November 27 because of Thanksgiving.

A Note from Gary

Every member is expected to participate in our fund raisers.  Our present two fund raisers are Dine Out to Help Out and Christmas Tree sales.  DOtoHO tickets are $50 each.  Every member should either purchase or sell at least 2-3 tickets.  The date to choose the winner has been moved to December because of low sales so far.

The Christmas Tree lot sign up sheet is now being filled.  All able bodied members should sign up for 2-3 sessions at the tree lot.  Additional help setting up the lot on November 26, tree unloading on November 28, and lot breakdown will also be needed.  Bill Ferrell has DOtoHO tickets.  Loanne Kuller has the tree lot sign up sheet.

Christmas Party December 15

We are holding our annual Christmas party again with the Rotary Club of Incline Village.  It will be at Patterson Hall at Sierra Nevada College on December 15. See Sandra Richards to sign up.  svrichards@sbcglobal.net.

Member Resignations

Two charter members of our club have recently resigned.  Al Kuckhoff and Bob Gilbert have both tendered their resignations.  Jim Jervey read a heartfelt letter from Al at the November 13 meeting. It is attached to the email message that sent this newsletter.  The club decided to present Al with an honorary membership.

Electric Bikes

At the board meeting, the club approved to display and promote 'An Electric Bike Under the Christmas Tree' at the Christmas tree lot. 50% of the profits on each bike sold will go to the Club. One electric bike will be on display along with brochures so that interested parties can contact Paul Guttman for further information. Our members will not be selling the bikes, merely promoting them.

Hyatt Donation

It turns out that the pumpkin martini was not a huge success.  Mark Pardue presented the club with $100, and promised to feature us again in the spring with a more enticing drink.

International Projects

Wend Schaefer and Jim and Fi O’Brien have been in Africa working in behalf of our international projects there.  They will be reporting back to the club when they return in a few weeks.

New District Simplified Grant

Young Life has approached the Club with a request for  $1,500.00 to help fund a trip to Mexico in the spring of 2009 to build houses for 3 Mexican homeless families. The Board discussed the purpose of the trip and past experiences from supporting Young Life. Gary informed the board that the Noon Club has decided to support the venture with $1,500 and Dennis indicated that the likelihood of a supporting grant from the District was very high. After additional discussion on all aspects of Young Life the board decided to go ahead and support the trip as the educational benefit for the participants is substantial and that the venture will help to build Goodwill and Better Friendship.
