Meeting on October 2
Our speaker was Judge Connie Steinheimer, who is a charter member of the Soroptimists of Truckee Meadows. She spoke to us about their project in Nepal. The Soroptimists have adopted a rural community in Nepal and have done many worthwhile projects there. They have funded a girls’ dormitory in this village, so that girls can get educated.
Meeting on October 9
Lynn Gillette, Interim Provost of Sierra Nevada College (SNC), was our speaker. He updated us on the current state of the college. SNC has an all time high enrollment this year and will grow slowly up to 1000 local students. A Fine Arts and Performing Arts Center will be the next building on campus, but the time table for that is not yet in place, pending funding.
We also heard from Michelle Roberts, who was chosen as an ambassadorial scholar for District 5190 for the year 2009-2010. Michelle will be going to Laos to study the cultural effect on agricultural practices there. She will use this as research for her doctorate at the University of Nevada, Reno.
We are Moving
The Ciao Mein restaurant will undergo renovation, so starting next week, we will be meeting across the way at the Hyatt at Cutthroat’s Saloon until further notice.
A New International Project
Our board voted to partner with a club in Bukoba, Tanzania to apply for a project to build a playground. Here is a synopsis of their request:
We want to build a playground for children in Bukoba, on the beach at Lake Victoria. During Sundays and holidays there are hundreds of people on the beaches. Here our dream is to build a playground containing nine swings, 6 baby swings, five slides by different sizes, a treasure hunt, see saws, climbing frames and monkey bars.We are planning to use local material and local handicraft, which will empower the local handicraft.
Open House at Justice Court
There will be an Open House at the remodeled Incline Justice Court, 865 Tahoe Boulevard, Suite 301, on October 16 from noon to 4. The dedication will take place at approximately 12:15p. The facility is being named the “James V. Mancuso Justice Court” in honor of Judge Mancuso in recognition of his 27 years of exemplary service as our Justice of the Peace. Judge Mancuso was a charter member of our Rotary Club and is currently an honorary member.
Future Meetings
The schedule can be found on our website. Please look at it and tell Bill Ferrall what the program will be for your week if it is coming up soon.
Hyatt Donation
During the month of October, the Hyatt will offer a special drink in the bar at the Lone Eagle. It is a pumpkin martini. Between the hours of 4:00pm until 10:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday nights, twenty percent of the proceeds from these drinks will be donated to our club. This could be a huge donation for us, so if martinis are your drink of choice, please support our club and visit the Hyatt on these nights next month.
