Meeting on June 5

Michael Ring, who was our outbound exchange student to France last year, spoke to us about his experiences in France and how much they changed his life.  He thanked us profusely.  Seeing him made us all realize what an impact Rotary has on people’s lives.

Virginia Miller came to thank us for the scholarship that we awarded to her aide so that she could attend a conference on teaching preschool children.

Our speaker was Deborah Schumacher, who is a family court judge in Washoe County in Reno and also teaches at the Judicial College at U.N.R. She talked to us about elder guardianship, elder abuse, and elder neglect.  She informed us that the official designation for ‘elder’ is age 60, which was certainly an eye opener for us older folks. However, we were informed that there were laws in place to protect elders from all kinds of exploitation and abuse.

Meeting June 12

Your newsletter editor was absent at a family graduation this week, but heard that Adam Robb was the speaker and he spoke about building ‘green’.  Since I have known Adam since age two, and have coached him both in youth soccer and Odyssey of the Mind, I feel assured that it was an interesting and informative presentation.

Meeting June 19

Lonny Davis, a Rotarian from Ceres, California, came to talk to us about his International wheelchair program, called Hope Haven International.  He has started a program that recycles old wheelchairs for distribution to many foreign countries.  They are collected mainly in California, refurbished in Iowa, and sent in containers using R.I. matching grants.

The program has grown by leaps and bounds and now refurbishes about 1000 wheelchairs per moth.  He explained that the difference between his program and Wheelchair International is that Wheelchair International uses all identical new wheelchairs that are made in China.  His program uses refurbished wheelchairs and matches the wheelchair with the person.             Volunteers are needed to go with the wheelchairs and help to modify them to fit the person.  His next trip is October 12-19 to Guatemala.  The cost is $1200 including airfare.  If you are interested, Wend can give you information or you can contact Mark Richard at mrichard@hopehaven.org.

This Week

This week is our yearly auction.  All of the goodies that we have collected all year from our travels will be packaged together and auctioned off by Geno and President Bob.  The proceeds will go to the Geno fund.  We will meet in the Lakeside Ballroom by the Lone Eagle Grill.  Spouses and friends are invited.  Credit cards and checks will be accepted. Don’t’ miss this opportunity to purchase items from all over the world.

Next Week

Next week we will be dark in lieu of Red, White, and Tahoe Blue.  http://www.redwhiteandtahoeblue.com/

We will be manning and running the rubber ducky race on July 3, just like last year, but we will not be working at the BBQ.  Please show up to help.  We will be selling duckies all day and then running the race at 2:15pm at Incline Beach.
