Meeting Today

After the introduction of a few guests and gifts from traveling Rotarians, President Bob then dinged Allen Ferris for his 23rd??? birthday, but Allen agreed to a $62 fine.  Announcements followed, and first up was Bob announcing who would be playing in the District 5190 golf tournament next Thursday.  John Paganelli, Gary Lee, Harry Haaser, and Sue Henricksen will represent our club.

Wend Schaefer reported on the successful completion of grants begun in 2002  and 2004 which funded the operations on osteomyelitis patients in Kenya.  Our $50,000 grant allowed 154 patients to be successfully treated.

Next, Doug Driver was presented with his Paul Harris plus five pin, which means over $5000 in contributions.

Sandra Richards asked us to open the previously provided fortune cookies.  Each one contained an invitation to our fireside on May 15 at the Thunderbird Lodge.  Dress is any interesting costume, and Kathie Maxwell (left) modeled appropriate attire. We will meet at the Hyatt at 5:30 pm and be driven over for a buffet catered by the Blue Onion in lieu of our meeting that day.

Alan Castator announced that Jasmine Marquez, who practiced her speech for us two weeks ago for the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year contest, won at the district level and then won for the whole state of California, and was given a $6,000 scholarship.  She will compete next at the national contest representing California, and Alan will keep us informed about how she does.

Casey Canino visited to thank us for our contributions to her summer music studies at Interlochen the last two years.  She sang A Change in Me from Beauty and the Beast and then told us about her college plans to attend Cal State Fullerton next year and continue her studies of musical theater.

Our speaker was James Cooper-Hill, who is an attorney and has recently purchased a home in Incline Village.  He has been involved in international litigation against terrorist nations, and has sued and obtained judgments against Iraq, Libya, and Sudan.  His clients have collected over $40 million in payments from those countries’ frozen assets being held in U.S. banks, and will soon collect another $13 million.  His speech was fascinating.

Next Week

We will hear from another lawyer next week.  Our speaker will be Judge Bob Perry, who presided at the lawsuit of three Nevada Women against Wyeth.  These women all claim that taking Prempro, which is a hormone replacement therapy manufactured by Wyeth, contributed to their subsequent breast cancer.  One of the defendants, Arlene Rowatt, is from Incline Village.
