Meeting  Today

After the introduction of quite a few guests, it was confession time.  Many Rotarians admitted to absences and brought gifts.  There were also several announcements.

Wend Schaefer announced that our 3H grant for $300,000 has been accepted for application, so has passed the first hurdle.  This grant will provide eye care training, examinations, and surgeries for Kenyans living in the Rift Valley of Kenya.  Many or the elderly have cataracts, so this is sorely needed.

Alan Castator brought Mindy from the Boys and Girls Club, who introduced Jasmine Marquez.  Jasmine has been selected as one of six representatives from 150 clubs in Northern California to compete in a speech contest telling what an impact the Boys and Girls Club has had on her.  She practiced her speech for us and we were duly impressed with her poise and comments about how she, as a child of illegal immigrants, has come so far. We were able to critique her speech to help her with the next hurdle. Since we are major supporters of the Boys and Girls Club, it made us proud to see the impact that this club has had on Jasmine.

Our speaker was Patrick Wright, from the California Conservancy, who updated us on how all of the organizations around the lake are working together for the health of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding environs.  He discussed wildfire prevention, water clarity, and transportation issues as well as air and water quality.  It was enlightening to us all.  We were happy to hear about how TRPA is now changing direction and working on issues other than environmental issues.  Patrick stated that Incline has become a model for the rest of the lake on fire prevention.  We can be proud of our fire department.
