Meeting  Today

We certainly had a lively meeting today.  Paul Guttman sang a poop song to us and was summarily given a $100 fine.

On a more serious note, Marianne Ericsson was inducted into the Paul Harris Society by visiting District 5190 Area Chair Lud Spolyar.  This means that she is the seventh member of our club to commit at least $1,000 per year to the Rotary Foundation.  Congratulations to Marianne, who also brought one of her business partners from Norway to the meeting.  Brita Lagmo is currently the president of her club, which is outside of Oslo in Nesodden.

Many Rotarians admitted to absences and brought gifts, but the most outstanding gift came from Mark Pardue, who couldn’t find anything interesting in Dubai, so donated a weekend at the Tahoe Hyatt, subject to availability, with a retail value of $1200.  This includes two night’s lodging, a couple’s massage, and either a dinner or brunch for two at the Lone Eagle Grille.

Mark also announced that our meeting room will be demolished later this year to make room for an upscale deli.  He promised to find us a nice new spot for our meetings. He welcomes suggestions for the deli.

Our speaker was Mike Richards, who has designed an unmanned aerial vehicle to be used for humanitarian missions and search and rescue missions.  Mike brought his tech guy, Kevin Brown, with him, but still couldn’t get the PowerPoint presentation to work with our projector, so he winged (no pun intended) his presentation.

The actual plane was on display for all to see and touch. It is made of handcrafted carbon fiber and can go up to 85 miles per hour on land or water.  It can carry a payload of up to 50 pounds and is unique because it has dual engines.  A similar military vehicle costs upwards of a million dollars, but his will sell for around one hundred thousand.  It will be flight tested in one week, and Mike stated that he already has one order.  His presentation made us proud to have such a creative humanitarian guy in our community.

Next Week, March 27

It looks like the meeting next week is a surprise.  However, since it is literacy month, as noted in this month’s Rotarian, we have been asked to bring at least one children’s book to Rotary next week   This should be new or almost new and will be given to Incline Elementary School.
